Switched on the TV and tuned into the morning news. The headlines :
1)Earthquake near Andaman, tsunami alert called off
2)PM calls a meeting to discuss the drought issue
3)5th Swine flu death in Pune.Toll in India rises to 8
So that was my morning cup of tea.It set me thinking. The first weird thought or rather a natural thought in my weird brain "Is the world coming to an end??" :(
With all the technological advances of the 21st century, where do we stand as compared to say a 100 years ago?
All right we have new drugs, improved communication, faster travel and blah blah blah but we still cant predict if nature will wipe us out clean in the next minute, hour or day.We have earthquake predicting systems but it still is not enough to prevent the damage. We have amazing irrigation systems, dams and water harvesting but we still cant protect our crop.
In spite of all the vaccines and medicines we have, we still cant prevent outbreaks of new diseases every year.
So ultimately even after all these advances we remain at the mercy of nature.
The very same nature that we have gone about mercilessly destroying. Are these droughts and diseases nature's way of teaching us a lesson?
A lesson that says: This is just the beginning.
Will it be enough if we try and become a green planet today or is it already too late?
Will we survive as a race or become a part of the extinct species ??
What lies in the future? A better tomorrow or an arid planet?
After SARS, bird flu, swine flu, what next?
Supposing that nature has some way of keeping track of all the harm done by human beings and then it does a simple give and take. And one day it unleashes all its wrath on this planet. Sound funny but then nature IS unpredictable ...right?
In the end I just remembered the Chinese curse(This is what wiki calls it)
"May you live in interesting times"
This was my morning cup of tea today.

As you said nature might be doing give and take.
But then this does mean that - we (human beings) do many good things. Otherwise how could we be blessed with natural resources which are helping 6 billion+ human beings to live.
Swine flu is definitely problem on today's date - it will also be conquered like SARS and Bird flu.
So many things we take for granted in life. Nature being the biggest of them, hardly we have time to sit back and appreciate what we've got.... so, nature gives a wake up call...
Ashish :Hmm about good things that we are doing to nature..well I definitely dont see much as in most of it is remedial.About the natural resources, well we are living isnt that a blessing too and what did we give for that :) too much gyaan...
Yup hopefully swine flu will be conquered soon
Khushi : Yes I guess nature gives us a wake up call and the question is do we wake up at all? :)
swine is just a hype...now a days in opd many people come and ask for swine flu testing!!...mycointerns working there r so overloaded with work...!!..curse the media!!..
nice blog:)
Dr.Pratap :
Thanks for stopping by :)
Yes as usual the media is playing a major role in spreading panic, but the death toll is also increasing pretty fast.
I am sure a lot of work for doctors
Lets praise the doctors for their work :)
Actually I have same opinion that we are doing mostly bad things to nature with our so called development.
But when I think in another perspective - 1. We humans are creation of nature, might be nature is doing these things through us.
2. Nature has created many great things over past millions/ billions of years, now it might be enjoying the fast changes human race is doing.
Hey, good blog...
I am sure you will get different answers/explanations from every other professional you talk to...I mean doctors vs philosophers vs environmentalists vs capitalists vs scientists...
As a human being (since we are capable of reasoning and thinking) I feel it's high time we realize that we have been out of sync with nature since a very long time and take measures to start reversing our impact on the planet before it's too late...
Some say climate change is cyclical in nature...and every major shift in atmospheric temperature has felt like the end of this world...Only time will tell what's the truth and what's in store for us as a species...but my gut feeling says it's time to clean up our act...
very very true..
guess this is just the beginning..
we have been doing whatever we felt from so long but now its Mother Nature's turn...
still much can be done and saved for more longer time but we humans are like dogs....no two minds act and think same...lols....
thats y if sumone wants to save the world then the other one say who cares....all will die together....jo hona hai hoga and etc...hmm..
we make a fool of ourselves everyday...and we r still doing it...
anyways
good blog...
good posts..
